Bright Morning Star

First let’s clear up a misunderstanding in some word variations. Note that the NIV uses the term ‘Morning Star’ while the KJV and NKJV uses ‘Lucifer’. Why the difference? ‘Lucifer’ is the Latin word meaning ‘light bringer’. NKJV used the Latin word instead of the translated word. Because of this many have mistakenly taken Lucifer as a name for Satan. This is incorrect using the original text. The Hebrew word ‘Heylel’ translates into ‘Morning Star’. This is a great example why Hebrew/Greek dictionaries are very helpful tools when studying the word.

Isa 14:12 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! NKJV

Isa 14:12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! NIV

***Wikipedia.com: Lucifer (/ˈluːsɪfər/ 'light-bringer', corresponding to the Greek name Ἑωσφόρος, 'dawn-bringer', for the same planet) is a Latin name for the planet Venus in its morning appearances and is often used for mythological and religious figures associated with the planet.

Original Hebrew text…

OT:1966 heylel (hay-lale'); from OT:1984 (in the sense of brightness); the morning-star:

OT:1984 halal (haw-lal'); a primitive root; to be clear (orig. of sound, but usually of color); to shine; hence, to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; causatively, to celebrate; also to stultify:

In Revelations Jesus calls himself the Bright Morning Star. Does this mean Jesus and Satan were brothers? Some suggest the story of Cain and Able point to Jesus and Satan. In that light you can see how some would suggest that. Either way, it’s hard to deny an association of some kind. More scripture to follow.

Rev 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches.

I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."

Bright: NT:2986 lampros (lam-pros'); radiant; by analogy, limpid; figuratively, magnificent or sumptuous (in appearance):

Morning: NT:4407 proinos (pro-ee-nos'); pertaining to the dawn, i.e. matutinal:

Star: NT:792 aster (as-tare'); a star (as strown over the sky), literally or figuratively:

Look at more of Isaiah 14 to get better context to the passage. Now we see a parallel analogy of God’s Judgement against the King of Babylon to the fall of Satan, the opponent of God. It is the King of Babylon being referenced as the fallen star. One thing we fail to take into consideration is how God used the nations for his set purpose. Judgement came on them the same as Israel.

Isa 14:1 The Lord will have compassion on Jacob; once again he will choose Israel and will settle them in their own land. Aliens will join them and unite with the house of Jacob… 3 On the day the Lord gives you relief from suffering and turmoil and cruel bondage, 4 you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon: NIV

Isa 14:12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." 15 But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit. NIV

It appears that at some point the Morning Stars were of one accord. God is responding to Job.

Job 38:4 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? NIV

Morning: OT:1242 boqer (bo'-ker); from OT:1239; properly, dawn (as the break of day); generally, morning:

OT:1239 baqar (baw-kar); a primitive root; properly, to plough, or (generally) break forth, i.e. (figuratively) to inspect, admire, care for, consider:

Star: OT:3556 kowkab (ko-kawb'); a star (as round or as shining); figuratively, a prince:

Another Parallel passage many see pointing to Satan, who in the beginning was a Guardian Cherub in the Garden of God. Jesus was there in the beginning of creation, giving good reason to believe that both Satan and Jesus resided together. At some point Satan was cast down to earth due to Pride. The parallel story is clearly spoken to the King of Tyre.

Luke 10:18 He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. NIV

Ezek 28:11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 "Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

"'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared.

14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15 You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. 16 Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.

17 Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. 18 By your many sins and dishonest trade you have desecrated your sanctuaries. So I made a fire come out from you, and it consumed you, and I reduced you to ashes on the ground in the sight of all who were watching. NIV

Rev 9:1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.

Something to consider. There are several suggested interpretations for the ‘Two great light’s’ in creation.

Two morning Stars. Jesus as greater light (Bright Morning Star) and Satan the lesser light (Morning Star).

The two covenants: The Covenant of the Law giving way to the Covenant of Faith.

Two witnesses, Moses in the First covenant, and Jesus/Yeshuah in the New Covenant.

Gen 1:16 God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. NIV

Still yet another connection with Isaiah 14. Israel worshiped the Gods of the other nations. Idolatry.

14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High."

Gen 11:1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel — because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. NIV

Jer 19:13 The houses in Jerusalem and those of the kings of Judah will be defiled like this place, Topheth — all the houses where they burned incense on the roofs to all the starry hosts and poured out drink offerings to other gods.'" NIV

2 Peter 1:19 And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

Rev 2:26 To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations—

27 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; he will dash them to pieces like pottery'—

just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give him the morning star. NIV
