Name of Jesus

Name of Jesus

The name of Jesus in the English or Greek, loses the significance from the Hebrew name that defines it.

Matt 1:20

..."Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means, "God with us." NIV

It’s common to take the name of Jesus at face value. Everything that God does goes more than surface level. The New Testament written in Greek takes away important details you get from the Hebrew text. Jewish names in Hebrew have a definition that you have to get from the Old Testament.

Jesus in Greek does not reveal the true nature of his name, but it directs you to the Hebrew equivalent.

Greek: NT:2424 Iesous (ee-ay-sooce'); of Hebrew origin [OT:3091]; Jesus (i.e. Jehoshua), the name of our Lord and two (three) other

The Greek definition refers us to Joshua’s name in the OT Hebrew.

Note; The Greek ‘Iesous’ sounds like the Spanish with the ‘J’ pronounced as an ‘H’, ‘Hesous’.

But the clarity comes from the Hebrew definition. Names in the OT text are Hebrew names.

There is translating names, giving the definition, and there is transliterating names, changing the Hebrew letters to the corresponding Greek, to the English. The Hebrew Yeshua is transliterated into Jesous, and into English, Jesus. (the letter J replaced the original ‘Y’ around the 15th century.

Jesus’ name in Hebrew is “transliterated” as ‘Joshua.’ Joshua it another type, or shadow of the Messiah who leads his people from the wilderness to the Promises land. Jesus/Joshua name in Hebrew is commonly pronounced “Yeshua,” translating into “Gods salvation.”

Ex 24:13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. NIV

Hebrew: OT:3091 Yehowshuwa` (yeh-ho-shoo'-ah); Jehovah-saved; Jehoshua (i.e. Joshua), the Jewish leader:

Ex 23:20 "See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. NIV

He is likely referring to Joshua as a ‘type’ or shadow of the Messiah Jesus.

Gods name is in him. The First three letters in Yahweh, Gods name, make up the first three letters of the name of Yeshua.

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child

and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. NIV

Note: The High Priest is only to take a virgin as his wife.

Immanuel, Hebrew for ‘god among us’. God came down to Mt Sinai, dwelling in a Tent in the wilderness. Jesus, the son of God came down and dwelt among men.

Immanuel: OT:6005 `Immanuw'el (im-maw-noo-ale');  with a pronominal suffix inserted; with us (is) God; Immanuel, a type name of Isaiah's son:
